Academy AlumniIntroduction to Marketing

An introductory-level marketing course designed to present an overview if marketing theory and principles to both marketing and non-marketing majors. 

Students are introduced to the basic theories and principles relevant to understanding marketing and the marketing process; specific attention is directed to macro- and micro- economic views of the marketplace, market planning tools, analysis of marketing opportunities, and building competitive advantage.  

The class develops concepts relevant to developing market information and for fostering an understanding of consumer behavior, the nature of business markets and business buyer behavior, and finally developing an appreciation of market segmentation.  

The base of information allows the class to develop perspective on the marketing mix elements: price, product, place and promotion and their management through specific strategies 

Finally, broader perspectives on marketing are discussed: including the impact of technology on marketing strategies, the global marketplace, and marketing's impact in society. 

Law of Contracts

Academy AlumniContract law is the foundation of all business transactions.  Unlike certain legal rights and duties which are imposed on you by the government, contract law is an area of the law where you can voluntarily assume legal duties to others and gain valuable legal rights in return.  

When you purchase a car, buy food, rent an apartment, take out insurance or purchase music on the internet, you are entering into a contract. In this course, students will learn the basics of contract law including how contracts are created, how they are enforced, and what can happen when contractual promises are broken. 

In addition to an overview of contract law, students will learn basic principles of trial procedure and evidence by participating in a mock trial competition at the conclusion of the course. 

Introduction to Sport Management

Academy AlumniImagine working in your dream job – sport management.  Sport management careers include working in the front offices of professional teams and minor league teams; working in the front offices of sports governing bodies such as the Professional Golf Association and the United States Tennis Association; working for college athletic departments; working in amateur sports, such as Amateur Athletic Union (AAU); working in high school sports; working in youth sports, such as Little League Baseball; working in sport marketing; working in stadiums and arenas; and working in sports media.  As you can see, sport management is a very diverse field with unlimited opportunities for those students who are willing to start earlier learning about the exciting careers available to you.  This is your opportunity to learn more about sport management and your dream job! 

This course is an introduction to the nature, scope, and significance of the total field of sport and recreation management.  The course will address the benefits of sport and recreation, the problem areas facing sport and recreation management, the socio-cultural dimensions of sport and recreation as they relate to sport and recreation management, the relationship between sport and recreation behavior and the natural environment, the evolution of the sport and recreation management profession, the institutional basis for the sport and recreation movement in the United States, the governance of sport, career opportunities in sport and recreation management, professional organizations, the roles of professional sport and recreation managers, ethical behavior and ethical codes in sport and recreation management, and current issues and trends in sport and recreation. 

Financial Engineering/Actuarial Science

In today's world, changing interest rates have a strong impact on banking and financial markets. Why and how? What is meant by the time value of money? How much money should you invest today in order to cover your freshman year college expenses? What effect does the rate of interest have on your car payments?

Understanding the time value of money is an important skill for a businessperson. In this highly quantitative course, various applications of the theory of interestare presented. Formulas and practical uses for effective rates of interest, annuities, loans and bonds are discussed, with an emphasis on problem-solving.

Actuaries have to answer analogous questions related to business, insurance, and financial services. The theory of interest provided a strong foundation for the understanding of these concepts.
