Accounting Professional Society at Ambler
V.I.T.A Program
Students at Temple University are very active in community service; regardless of what campus they attend. Temple University’s Ambler chapter of Accounting Professional Society (APS) is currently participating in a program where volunteers assist low-income families with their tax preparation. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is designed to help families who are unsure of which credits and deductions they can make when it comes to that time of year.
Last spring, a speaker shared information with Dr. Steve Balsam’s class about the VITA program and students were enthusiastic about participating. The program, which is an IRS program, has been in existence for some time but this is the first year that APS has been involved. The program is run by student volunteers in APS who have faculty review their work. Many of the families are from Ambler or surrounding townships, but there have been some clients from Philadelphia. So far student volunteers have prepared 30 returns for families with a goal of 100 for the season. Last year's APS president, Amanda Kemp, who is now a Temple Alumni, has even returned to participate to help reach that goal.
“It’s a great learning experience for students. Not only do they learn to prepare tax returns, a valuable skill, they also learn to deal with clients, an even more important skill,” says Dr. Balsam.
American Marketing Association
TU-AMA has participated in various community service initiatives in the greater Philadelphia area. We participate in causes that we feel we can make a great impact as well as finding an outlet to utilize our marketing skills for the greater good of the community.
Philadelphia Children’s Hospital
One of TU-AMA’s biggest initiatives is creating holiday cards for Children’s Hospital. Every year TU-AMA creates cards and includes treats and small gifts for sick children for Halloween, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Valentine’s Day, and Easter/Spring holidays.
Susan G Komen for the Cure
TU-AMA also hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Tables in the month of October to promote early detection and awareness of the disease. TU-AMA distributes bookmarks, pamphlets, and other literature to educate the students, facility, and staff that walk the walls of Speakman on breast cancer. TU-AMA also sells baked goods and pencils to raise donations for Susan G Komen for the Cure.
Big Brothers, Big Sisters
The Big Brothers, Big Sisters Bowl for Kids’ Sake is an event TU-AMA will be participating in this year. Bowl for Kids’ Sake is Big Brothers Big Sisters' signature fundraising and awareness program. TU-AMA participates by donating its time and money to cause. Also, TU-AMA promotes the organization to our members at meetings and on our website.
Volunteer Activities
TU-AMA also participates in various community service events sponsored by Temple University and/or the Fox School of Business. In the past, TU-AMA has volunteered its time at the 1K for a Day, Temple B Moore, and FreshServe 2007 events sponsored by Temple Student Government. At these three events, TU-AMA worked at various sites in the North Philadelphia Community by cleaning and beautifying.
Red Cross Blood Drive
TU-AMA has been a strong supporter of the Blood Drives hosted by College Council in the Fox School of Business every semester. TU-AMA has hosted tables in the Speakman Hall Breezeway to sign up students to donate blood as well as promote the Blood Drive at TU-AMA meetings. Also, TU-AMA donates on the day of blood drives whether it’s donating our own blood, holding a person’s hand donating, or working the registration and snack tables.
Other Activities
TU-AMA also participates in PBL’s Canned Food Drives. TU-AMA collects canned food and other food at our weekly meetings to support our fellow student organization’s community service efforts. TU-AMA also participates in the annual Temple University Relay for Life. Also, promoted Fox School of Business blood drive.

Both members and candidates are encouraged to volunteer in community events in order to gain points toward promotion and/or induction within the organization. Beta Alpha Psi exceeded the required donation and raised a total of $420 for the fund. The walk lasted until noon, and the participants had a great time for a great cause!
Philadelphia Cares Organization/Ray of Hope Foundation
Beta Alpha Psi members teamed up with the Ray of Hope Foundation and Philadelphia Cares Organization to refurbish a dilapidated home for a South Philadelphia family in need. The house was in such a bad shape due to water damage that the family of four – two adults and two young children who lived in the house were forced to occupy only one room. First, the group helped the children organize their belongings so that they could be safely transferred out of the house while work was being done. Next, the floors were prepped for new flooring and the walls were cleaned and prepped for a new paint job. By the end of the day, the BAP members and the Ray of Hope crew had really accomplished something great for a deserving family.

Members set up tables and prepared sandwiches and continued to help out throughout the event by serving food and cleaning up after participants. The group helped to complete stage one of a three-stage stream restoration project along the Darby Creek in Lansdowne, PA. By removing invasive plant species along the creek bed, members helped to provide habitat for native plants and animals.
Philabundance
Gamma members also participated in Philabundance food banking and organized left over food into boxes with like products. Members packed 1,727 boxes. The food was then distributed to local charities such as soup kitchens and given to senior citizens or individuals with financial need. On Philly Cares Day, 31 Gamma members worked at McKinley Elementary School, clearing and cleaning the surrounding garage and playground area. The group also helped paint four hallways in the school.
Gamma also contributed to Philabundance by conducting a holiday Food drive. In total, over 3 boxes and several bags worth of non-perishable goods were collected throughout general and Friday meetings.
Neighborhood Bike Works
Gamma Iota Sigma members also participated in Oktoberfest, which was a fundraiser for the chapter and also included the Neighborhood Bike Works is an event whose mission promotes youth development by offering educational, recreational, and career building opportunities through bicycling, while also promoting cycling itself as a healthy and environmentally friendly form of transportation. With this program, students complete a 7-week basic “Earn a bike” class, which teaches repair, safe and effective urban cycling, fitness, environmental responsibility and teamwork. Upon completion, each student earns a bike, a helmet and a lock. NBW creates opportunities for positive extracurricular activities for young people. The key to its success has been through its mentoring and creation of positive role models. Since its inception, NBW has introduced over a thousand young Philadelphians to the joys and freedom of cycling in the city. Gamma is not only assisting with this project, they are donating to it as well with events such as Beef N’Beverage in March and their annual Date Auction in April, and they also conduct a walk-a-thon where a set amount of the proceeds is contributed to NBW.
Charitable Donations
Gamma Iota Sigma also holds many smaller events across the school year, such as bake sales, which raised around $60, 50/50 raffles and a Valentine’s Day sales table. Last year, Gamma raised almost $3,000 for charitable donations and is looking to break their record.
Relay for Life
Gamma members volunteered to help clean up Wissahickon Fairmount Park, in total, 44 members helped clean up, and that’s not all, Gamma is so involved with community service that they also participate in Relay for Life an event that brings teams of 15 people together to take turns in walking a track from 6pm to 8am the next morning. This event raises a considerable amount for cancer charities every year, if you are interested in participating, see if your organization is involved or start a team yourself. Gamma donated $329.90 to Relay for Life in 2007.
One Book, One Philadelphia
Another community program that Gamma members participate in is a mailing distribution of information for the city of Philadelphia’s “One Book, One Philadelphia” project at the Free Library of Philadelphia. The volunteers placed the home addresses of all the prospective participants of the project onto information booklets. These booklets were soon after mailed to the homes of 17,000 Philadelphians to notify them of the reading project that is being established within their city to reunite everyone. Ten members also attended Jumpstart and worked with local schools to promote literacy.
Royal Gardens Association
Gamma members traveled to the Schuylkill Center and helped with their environmental efforts to remove invasive plants from a specific region. The members with other volunteers removed various plants to prepare the region for spring planting of American chestnut trees. Members also worked at the Royal Gardens Association where the group volunteered for 3 hours and revamped several gardens, planted over two dozen trees for the spring season, and removed debris.

Bake Sale- Delaware Valley Children’s Charity
The IBA in conjunction with other Fox School of Business Student Professional Organizations (SPO) conducted a fund raiser for the Delaware Valley Children’s Charity to buy Christmas presents for less fortunate children. Each SPO was tasked to raise one hundred dollars for the foundation as well as buy a present for their sponsored child. The IBA raised $80 through a bake sale event and donated the remaining twenty dollars to meet the goal.
Bake Sale- Hurricane Ike Victims
IBA members also conducted a fundraiser for the American Red Cross in support of displaced victims of Hurricane Ike that ravaged the Southern part of the country. Members baked goods and volunteered their time for the cause. Their efforts were well appreciated.
IBA Mentoring Program
IBA developed a mentor program comprised of juniors and seniors with the sole purpose of providing assistance to incoming freshmen and transfer students. They understood that sometimes new students don’t know where to turn, but having someone at their disposal to answer questions and share tips about their experiences is a great way to relate to other people and learn new things about Temple University.
Carnival of Cultures
IBA members organized the Carnival of Cultures, a one day event dedicated to cultural learning at Temple University. Many student groups participated and some performed dances from their native culture.
Passport Night
IBA co-hosted Passport night in conjunction with the Center for International Business and Educational Research at the Fox School (CIBER). Passport night is designed to simplify the process for any student wishing to travel abroad. Services provided include document processing, passport photos and technical assistance related to travel. The IBA has become a strong advocate for the study abroad program at Temple University by engaging in such activities.
