Lynne Andersson's Honors Course with Fran Dunphy Garners National Mention

Temple men’s basketball coach Fran Dunphy, who has taught an honors class in the university’s prestigious Fox School of Business the past six years, obviously is serious about education. He credits human resource management Associate Professor Lynne Andersson for working with him as team-teachers of the course “Management, Theory and Practice: From the Locker Room to the Board Room.”

“The opportunity to get in the classroom is a lot of fun for me,” Dunphy said. “It gives me a different perspective of the kids and kids a different perspective of me. I think all college coaches ought to try it. You need some help with one (member) of the faculty who thinks you can add to the experience. I hope I continue to do it for a long time.” The course garnered a national mention on the CBS broadcast of Sunday's Temple-Kansas game, with commentator Verne Lundquist saying, "This is the sixth straight year that Fran Dunphy teaches an honors course in the university's prestigious school of business with Dr. Lynne Andersson."

Fox Honors Program Graduates 81 Seniors

In the past academic year, 81 seniors graduated with distinction for completing their honors program requirements. The list of companies that employed our outstanding graduates includes Lincoln Financial Group, KPMG, TD Bank, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Aon, Franklin Templeton Investments, Comcast Corporation, PNC, Blackrock, Deloitte and the United States Navy. Congratulations to all of our alumni!

Three Fox Honors Students Compete in Travelers Actuarial Case Competition

Fox Honors students Kerwing Hy, William Thorsson and Sean Murray were among a group of students that traveled to Connecticut this past fall to compete in a Travelers Actuarial Case Competition.

Integrating the iPad into the Honors Classroom

"Business Honors classes are capped at twenty-five students, so personal attention is guaranteed. Classes consist of more discussion and interaction. Most projects are done in groups to simulate the real-world environment. All of this allows you to build personal relationships with classmates and faculty that wouldn't be possible in a larger lecture setting."

"As a transfer student, the words "adjustment period" certainly understated my first couple of weeks at Temple University. Thankfully, the Fox Honors Program's dedicated staff of advisors made registering for my classes one less thing I had to worry about. My honors classes were more challenging in some ways, but I found that their smaller sizes, and the professors' integration of current events were well worth it."

Faculty Spotlight

Dr. Eric Eisenstein
Assistant Professor
Marketing and Supply Chain Management (MSCM)

Dr. Eric Eisenstein primarily researches decision making in situations where the consequences matter to individuals, including high-cognition managerial and consumer decision-making, decision support systems, decision aids, debiasing methods, and learning and the development of expertise. He has published in the Journal of Marketing Research, the Handbook of Consumer Psychology, the Handbook of Marketing, the Journal of Business Research and Advances in Consumer Research. He has worked in marketing and management consulting, including work for AOL, AT&T, Chase Manhattan Bank, Mercer Management Consulting and many others. He has taught at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Cornell University, where he was awarded the Faculty Innovation in Teaching Grant three consecutive times. He received his master's degree and PhD from Wharton.

Dr. Krupa Viswanathan
Associate Professor
Risk, Insurance, and Healthcare Management

Dr. Krupa Subramanian Viswanathan teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Actuarial Science and Risk Management & Insurance. Her research interests include the demutualization of insurance companies and their financial performance in the years surrounding conversion. Another research focus is the impact of genetic testing on insurers and on policyholder behavior. She also studies the use of credit history by insurers. Dr. Viswanathan is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries and the American Risk and Insurance Association. She received her Ph.D. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Professor Alicia Strandberg
Assistant Professor (Teaching/Instructional Track)
Statistics

Professor Alicia Strandberg has been appointed as an Assistant Professor (Teaching/Instructional Track) of Statistics. She received her MS in Applied Statistics from Villanova University. Professor Strandberg is currently a PhD candidate in the Statistics Department at Temple University. She has received the Temple University Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Doctoral Student, and was President-Elect of the Temple Association of Graduate Students in Statistics. In the past, she has taught courses at Saint Joseph's University, as well as at Temple. She has also served as Senior Special Analyst for Towers Perrin, where she researched and implemented benefits administration calculators to assist clients. She also worked in employee training and has run in-house training sessions at Towers Perrin.

"My name is Farid Shaikh and I am very proud to say that I am a Business Honors alumni and past president of the Business Honors Student Association. I graduated from Temple in 2004 with my business degree and I am currently pursuing a dual MBA and Doctorate in Dentistry. Being involved at Temple and with the Business Honors program helped me more then I had ever imagined. I was able to learn how to interact and communicate with different types of people. Most importantly I learned how to work hard, be thorough, and try my best at whatever the situation was at hand. When I was a freshman at Temple, everyone said that this was going to be the best four years of our lives. Those people were right. My experience at Temple was amazing. My favorite part about Temple was that the opportunities were endless. You can do whatever and be whatever you want. I wish you all the very best of luck, but before I conclude I am going to share with you a small (and a little cheesy).
