The Innovative Idea Competition encourages students, faculty, alumni and staff at Temple to generate ideas for launching exciting and sustainable new businesses.

To enter, simply describe in no more than two pages:

  • What problem does your product or service solve, or what new need does your product or service fulfill?
  • Describe your new product or service -- how is it unique or different?
  • How big is the market for your product or service? Who is your target customer? How will you sell your product or service to them?
  • What competition exists for your new product or service? What gives your product or service an advantage?
  • Great ideas are worth protecting. How will you ensure that your idea stays your idea and is not copied?

Prizes will be awarded in two divisions:

  • Undergraduate
  • Graduate / Faculty / Staff / Alumni

Judging

Submissions will be judged by a panel of experienced entrepreneurs, senior corporate executives, and venture capitalists. All judges are held to the strictest standards of confidentiality.

Awards

Idea Competition winners are eligible for cash prizes and use of the Innovation Lab to prepare for the Feasibility Study, the next phase of the Business Innovation Competition.

Guidelines

Winning ideas will convince the judges that you have identified an exciting business opportunity. Judges will consider whether:

  • There is a market - a group of buyers willing and able to pay - for your product or service.
  • The product or service fits well with the market you describe.
  • You have identified a viable way to generate revenues from your product or service.
  • Your product or service will be successful in the marketplace.
  • Your idea is strong and highly original.

Tips

  • Keep your language concise. Two pages maximum.
  • Make the proposal compelling. The best ideas stand out immediately - causing judges to think, "Of course that will work!" or "Why didn't I think of that?"
  • Writing such a short and compelling piece will require more thought and research than you might think initially.
  • Present a well organized and persuasive document.
  • The size of the opportunity and the fit between your idea and the market opportunity are more important than technological verbiage.

Remember

  • Two-page maximum
  • Typed, single-spaced, 12pt Arial font
  • Submit by October 4 at 5 pm -- no extensions!
  • Submit via email to iei@temple.edu
