Ten Start-ups Selected for Innovator Spotlight at Privacy Identity Innovation

Ben Franklin Technology investing $1.7M in 11 companies

Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania said Wednesday its board of directors has given it the go-ahead to invest nearly $1.7 million in 11 early-stage biotechnology, mobile-technology and advanced-manufacturing companies.
RCD Technology Inc. was approved for a $160,000 investment. The Quakertown, Pa., company makes radio frequency identification, or RFID, tags for specific, high-value technically challenging applications. RCD received $2 million in venture capital in 2006.

Temple program offers entrepreneurs guidance on attracting investors

Some Philadelphia startups are getting help to polish their pitch to investors. MidAtlantic Diamond Ventures is a coaching program for up-and-coming companies. It's based at Temple University's Fox School of Business. Executive director Jaine Lucas says in Philadelphia several of the startups are life-sciences firms -- companies hoping to sell a new pharmaceutical, medical device or some other biotech product.
"They were absolutely the darlings of the investment community even as recently as five or six years ago," Lucas said. "The issue with a lot of life-science firms is that the dollars to get to that point are huge, the failure rates typically very, very high."

Tama Copeman Appointed Chair of Mid-Atlantic Diamond Ventures
