The 2007 Mayors' Technology Summit, "Preparation, Response and Recovery: Solutions for Managing Catastrophic Events," will focus on information technology solutions to help local leaders meet the challenges of crisis and disaster management. The 2007 summit will be hosted by the City of Los Angeles, Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa and coordinated by the Temple University Center for Competitive Government.

The summit will bring together local, regional, and federal policy makers with business leaders representing the corporate IT sector. It will showcase leading-edge research and provide a forum in which executives, municipal leaders, the federal government, and university faculty can debate the vision and future of the state of municipal and regional IT, preparedness, security and public safety. Participants will enjoy the unique opportunity to: 1) learn how municipalities are addressing critical infrastructure issues as several major US cities will showcase their "best practice" for mass disaster planning; 2) discover how the IT corporate sector is investing in the development of new technology solutions; and 3) join in an interactive forum to share ideas and experiences in the challenges facing their communities with respect to public safety, response and recovery planning. Specifically, this year's topics will include panels, seminars and workshops focusing on innovative a proaches to mass disaster planning; community evacuation; post evacuation strategies for recovery; public and private sector solutions to mass disaster planning; and effective communications & interoperability standards and technology.

Participants will include 30 - 40 mayors and CIOs of major American cities, 10-15 executives of major technology companies, and regional security directors responsible for critical infrastructure.

In Los Angeles, meetings and discussions will take place in the attractive venues unique to the city. A reception in the Bradley Room on the top floor of the City Hall will set the tone for the summit. Other venues might include the Getty Center, the Los Angeles Athletic Club, the Mayor's Mansion and Paramount Studios.

Temple University's Center for Competitive Government has coordinated four previous summits. Then-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani hosted both the 2000 and 2001 summits in New York City, which centered on local best practices and electronic government. Mayor Willie Brown of San Francisco hosted the 2003 summit focusing on technology, HLS, public safety and economic development.  Mayor Anthony Williams of Washington, D.C. hosted our fourth summit in 2004, expanding on the same theme, one which continues to be relevant to local leaders. The Los Angeles Summit will build on the past events to create a distinctive opportunity for Mayors, CIO's, HLS Directors to share ideas and learn about new and visionary practices to protect city infrastructure.
