Dr. J. David Cummins joins The Fox School of Business as the Joseph E. Boettner Chair of Risk Management, Insurance and Financial Institutions. He will also serve as the Director of the Advanta Center for Research in Financial Institutions and as a member of the Fox Research Roundtable.
Prior to joining The Fox School, Dr. Cummins was the Harry J. Loman Professor of Insurance and Risk Management and the Executive Director of the S.S. Huebner Foundation at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania for more than three decades.
In a recent article in the Journal of Risk and Insurance that analyzed the relative contributions to the field of risk management and insurance of all scholars, Dr. Cummins was recognized as the premier researcher in this discipline in the world.
Dr. Cummins’ research focuses on insurance economics; financial risk management; productivity and efficiency; and securitization. To date, Dr. Cummins has authored, coauthored, edited and co-edited 16 books as well as 34 chapters in books and monographs. Dr. Cummins has written over 85 articles in prestigious academic journals including: Journal of Risk and Insurance, Mathematics and Economics, The Journal of Banking and Finance, The Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, The Journal of Monetary Economics, The Journal of Financial Economics, The Journal of Law and Economics, Management Science, The Journal of Business, The Journal of Economic Perspectives, Econometrica, Economic Letters, The Bell Journal, Federal Reserve Bank Reviews, The Brookings Papers, North American Actuarial Review, and Insurance, and Geneva Papers. In addition, he has authored 32 articles in practitioner-oriented journals and has authored over 35 reports.
Dr. Cummins has organized over 150 conferences, and has served as a panelist, discussant, moderator, and chair of many sessions in risk and insurance conferences. He was the editor of the Huebner International Series on Risk, Insurance and Economic Security for Springer and for the Journal of Risk and Insurance from 1992 to 1997. Dr. Cummins is currently the co-editor of the Journal of Banking and Finance, a premier journal in the field and is the current Associate Editor of eight journals in risk and insurance and finance. Additionally, Dr. Cummins has held the highest office in the profession as the President of the American Risk and Insurance Association, and has served as a visiting scholar at universities in the U.S and abroad, and for The Federal Reserve Banks of New York, Philadelphia and Atlanta.
Dr. Cummins brings a depth of teaching, research, and consulting experience to The Fox School. His total citation count is over 1300 and he has won over 15 awards and prizes for his articles in Risk and Insurance – most notably in The Journal of Risk and Insurance, the flagship journal in his field.
He has consulted with many major insurance companies, financial institutions, and governmental organizations, including: Bermuda Insurance Development Council, American Insurance Association, Massachusetts Property Insurance Underwriting Association, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, Metropolitan Property-Casualty Insurance Company, and Allstate Insurance Group.
Dr. Cummins’ greatest contributions have been in the doctoral area. He has chaired 41 doctoral dissertations and is currently chairing 11 dissertations. His doctoral students have all achieved distinction in their own right, and have produced outstanding work both in academe and industry. Most of his students are professors at many elite institutions.
