Samuel D. Hodge, Jr., Professor and Chair, Legal Studies

JD, Temple University School of Law
Dean’s Certificate, Graduate Studies Division, Temple University School of Law
Mediation Training, Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University School of Law
Courses Taught: I have taught a variety of course at Temple University at both the Fox School of Business and at Temple Law School. I have even taught law in Japan and Italy. My courses are law related and I teach the largest class at the University. Well, that statement is not 100% accurate. I also teach anatomy but that is a long story.
Teaching Style:   I hated law school and my teaching style is opposite everything that I experienced while pursuing that degree. So, I have two goals when I teach. Not only do I want my students to learn about the law, but I want them to have fun while doing it.  My classes are taught in an audiovisual format and are filled with animations, video clips, sound bytes, and pictures. Let me just say that I leave no stone unturned in my attempt to bring the law alive.

Places I have lived...

  • I am Philadelphia born and raised and eat soft-pretzels with mustard at 7 in the morning.

Favorite sports teams...

  • I grew up going to Philadelphia Eagles games and was in attendance when they won the Championship in 1960. By the way, it is not true that I threw a snowball at Santa Claus during that game. I was only 11 years old.

Websites I visit daily...

  • I think Google is a great research tool and I only wish I had bought stock in the company when it first came out. On the other hand, if I had purchased stock, I would be relaxing on a yacht in the Caribbean instead of writing this.

Favorite foods...

  • Hmm.I am boring since I don't eat red meat but I sure do like pasta and pizza.

Least known fact about myself ...

  • I am the publisher of several musical compositions that have been recorded by such artists as the Pointer Sisters, Barry Manilow and the Isley Brothers. The songs have also been used in movies and television. From a legal point of view, I was recently involved in a movie starring Shawn Penn and Naomi Watts. Remember, you did not hear about this from me.

Research interests...

  • Medicine, medicine and more medicine! I have published over 80 medical/legal articles, in a variety of journals and authored an anatomy book published by the educational arm of the American Bar Association in 2006. I also drew the anatomical illustrations for the text. If you are sensing that I have a leaning towards the creative arts, you are correct. I was on my way to becoming a starving artist until I found out that I was color blind, so I became a lawyer. Go figure!
